Hire a Veteran at the Hiring Red, White, and You! Veterans Job Fair!
For 2023, Workforce Solutions Southeast Texas is celebrating the 12th annual Hiring Red, White and You! Veterans Job Fair, connecting over 30 employers with Veterans, their eligible spouses, family, and friends. Southeast Texas employers are ardent supporters of local Veterans. In 2022, we served over 600 veterans and over 400 Veterans were employed. Employers that hire and retain veterans can receive up to $9,600 in federal tax credit through the Work Opportunity Tax Credit (WOTC) program.

Veteran retention is vital to Southeast Texas with the current unemployment rate being 5.8 percent as compared to one year ago when it was 5.5 percent. The tight labor market offers Veterans an opportunity to put their skills into action and highlight their dedication, military training, and expertise for teamwork, for local businesses. Other resources are offered to Veterans, spouses and transitioning military members include training, higher education enrollment, and access to the Civilian Occupation Translator, which converts military training to related civilian occupations.

"Southeast Texas Works!" PODCAST UPDATE

The first podcast released in October featured two dynamic representatives of the CHRISTUS Health System, Michelle Hammerly, Director of Education, and Jennifer Strope, Director of HR Strategy. Michelle provided an interesting inside look at CHRISTUS Southeast Texas Health System and the efforts their organization implements to keep a strong, trained, and caring staff. She and Jennifer also shared details about CHRISTUS' teacher externships, and the diverse range of healthcare professions beyond just doctors and nurses.

Later in October, we released the podcast featuring one of our favorite topics, Local First, The Golden Triangle Polymers Project. Many local residents have seen the gigantic billboards through Southeast Texas encouraging them go on-line and register for the more than 4,500 jobs that will be created with the building of the new refinery in Orange, Texas, a multi-billion-dollar joint venture between Chevron Phillips Chemical (CPChem) and QatarEnergy. Our guest, Heather Betancourth from Chevron Phillips Chemical reveals details about the project and its Local First initiative, which prioritizes hiring local talent and sourcing local vendors and suppliers. Dana Willis, the board' project coordinator assigned to Local First co-hosted the podcast and shared her experiences with the project.

Take Note: WSSET Business Forum Update

Workforce Solutions Southeast Texas virtual business forums made their return in October. As part of the workforce board's strategic plan, these forums were used to engage business leaders in essential industries and to gather their input through group discussions and polling questions.

During the first three weeks of October, forums for the healthcare and education industries took place. 19 people attended the healthcare industry forum on October 10th. Dr. Cynthia Stinson, chair of the Dishman School of Nursing at Lamar University, and Dr. LeAnn Chisholm-Springer, director of the nursing and allied health program at Lamar Institute of Technology, each provided a presentation on industry and education updates.

The education industry forum was held October 17th with 34 people educators, from early childhood to higher education, participating in the interactive session. Dr. Shannon Allen, superintendent of Beaumont Independent School District, and Dr. Wendy Elmore, provost and executive vice president for academic and student affairs at Lamar State College Orange, each provided a presentation on the current state of the education industry and what each entity is working on to develop working professionals.

Two additional industry forums for the manufacturing and transportation industries will be highlighted in the November edition of JobBRIEF, along with complete data for all forums.
