"Southeast Texas Works!" PODCAST UPDATE
In celebration of Veterans Day and the Hiring Red, White and You! Veterans Job Fair,
November saw the re-release of a previously released podcast: Helping Veterans
Transition to the Civilian Labor Force. The "Best Of Southeast Texas Works Podcast"
episode features Ms. Jo Ikard, a Port Arthur, Texas, native and a USMC veteran, currently
serving as District Supervisor Gulf Coast, Texas Veterans Commission (TVC). Ikard discusses
several initiatives offered through TVC to help Veterans transition successfully back into
civilian life and shares some insight into her background.
Later in November, our podcast session featured Shandi Conner and Marcus Henslee with Associated
Builders and Contractors, Inc (ABC) Southeast Texas Chapter. Conner is the Chapter president and
Henslee is the education vice-chair. ABC is well known for offering flexible training schedules
and high-level courses which help to create skilled craft workers for employer members.
Henslee and Conner explain ABC's unique partnership with industry in Southeast Texas and
their commitment to workforce development.

Hiring Red, White and You! Veterans Job Fair
Hiring Red, White and You! Veterans Job Fair is an annually statewide job fair honoring
Veterans, military spouses, family members, and the general public. Workforce boards
host the job fairs beginning November 1st through November 17th. Workforce Solutions
Southeast Texas held its Veterans Job Fair on November 8th and 40 Veterans attended
the event. These Veterans connected with as many as 40 employers representing all
industries in Southeast Texas including petrochemical, manufacturing, construction,
healthcare and medical. Veterans, and their eligible spouses, receive priority service
through the workforce system. The goal of the state-wide event is to help Veterans
transition to civilian life in the communities of their choice. Participating employers
met the Veterans, discussed their skills and abilities acquired through military
service, and possible job opportunities. A total of 157 job seekers were in attendance.

Rapid Response activities
Workforce Solutions Southeast Texas hosted rapid response orientations for Invista
and International Paper to provide support to workers as they transition to new employment.
The orientations took place at the Invista plant in Orange, Texas, on October 11th and
12th . International Paper's rapid response orientation sessions were held at the Orange
Mill on November 2nd and 3rd. Rapid Response Orientations discuss workforce programs
and resources, provides important details on Unemployment Insurance (UI)benefits, healthcare
insurance after a lay-off, Trade Adjustment Insurance (TAA), workforce services and
resources, including job fairs.
On November 9th and 10th Workforce Solutions Southeast Texas along with over 50 area
employers hosted a Community Job Fair, for Invista and International Paper employees.
The Job Fair, initiated by local business leaders, was designed to assist the dislocated
workers navigate their next steps, whether they would like employment with another company
or attend school for training. As a positive outcome of the job fair, as many as 10
dislocated workers were hired by other companies and several received offers to interview.
