2023 Teacher Externship connects Education to High-demand Industry and Training |
The 2023 Teacher Externship initiative successfully concluded on June 9, 2023, as 60 teachers
shared their real-world experiences from various Host sites throughout Southeast Texas. The
teachers, selected from over 130 applicants, were assigned to employers and training institutions
aligned to the area's high-growth, high-demand industries: petrochemical, maritime, health
care/medical, and manufacturing. The educators spent 3 1/2 days on-site with Host representatives
with the goal to better understand skills, training, and learning requirements for in-demand
occupations in Southeast Texas. As part of the externship, the teachers created lesson plans
aligned with their subject-matter, to teach students to apply the academic and technical
skills they experienced.
"The teachers were excited to participate in the Teacher Externship and their enthusiasm
was demonstrated through their presentations", commented Mary Hammon, executive director.
"Our goal is to continue to support this type of workforce development collaboration in
Southeast Texas to enhance the connection to industry, and help prepare our youth for jobs,
now and in the future."

"Southeast Texas Works!" PODCAST UPDATE
In June, the second episode of our conversation with Chris Kirkendall, Hardin County Commissioner
and Judge Pro-Tem was released. Kirkendall is actively involved in his community and shares
his goals for the continued growth and success of Hardin County. He discusses the importance
of workers being willing to be trained, the value of good customer service, and the need to
implement broadband connectivity to the county. Finally, Kirkendall explains his successful
transition back into civilian life after serving his country in the military.
Look for the release of the Federation for Advanced Manufacturing Education (FAME) podcast in
July which features guests Tony Davis, The Manufacturing Institute National Director, FAME USA,
Stacey Nichols, President, FAME Golden Triangle Chapter, and Dereck Cloeren, Operations Manager,
Cloeren Incorporated.

Southeast Texas Welcomes Jeffery Darby to Workforce Board
Mr. Jeffery Darby was appointed to the Workforce Solutions Southeast Texas board in June. Mr.
Darby, president of the Sabine Area Central Labor Council, AFL-CIO, worked for the U.S.
Department of Labor as a wage and hour investigator for 33 years prior to his board appointment.
He served as a consultant for unions and employee-oriented firms to help enforce employee's
rights. Mr. Darby worked with the U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District, conducted public
outreach programs, and trained numerous investigators.

Workforce Solutions Southeast Texas 2022 Marketing Strategy Results merited an award from the
American Marketing Association Houston (AMA Houston) at their annual Crystal Awards Gala in
May. The Crystal Awards event is the largest and best marketing awards gala in Houston with
the coveted Crystal Award being awarded to marketing that demonstrates proven results. Event
attendees represent outstanding marketing professionals across Southeast Texas and Houston.
The largest companies, universities, sports teams, hospital systems, and agencies enter and
attend the gala.
Workforce Solutions 2022 Marketing Strategy, developed and managed by The Lee Group,
demonstrated impressive year-over-year engagement increases with both Employer and Job
Seeker markets. The 2022 digital strategy delivered significant increases across the board
in key performance indicators for the workforce board. We'd like to congratulate The Lee
