2023 Teacher Externship connects Education to High-demand Industry and Training
The 2023 Teacher Externship initiative successfully concluded on June 9, 2023, as 60 teachers shared their real-world experiences from various Host sites throughout Southeast Texas. The teachers, selected from over 130 applicants, were assigned to employers and training institutions aligned to the area's high-growth, high-demand industries: petrochemical, maritime, health care/medical, and manufacturing. The educators spent 3 1/2 days on-site with Host representatives with the goal to better understand skills, training, and learning requirements for in-demand occupations in Southeast Texas. As part of the externship, the teachers created lesson plans aligned with their subject-matter, to teach students to apply the academic and technical skills they experienced.

"The teachers were excited to participate in the Teacher Externship and their enthusiasm was demonstrated through their presentations", commented Mary Hammon, executive director. "Our goal is to continue to support this type of workforce development collaboration in Southeast Texas to enhance the connection to industry, and help prepare our youth for jobs, now and in the future."
