SkillUp Southeast Texas Provides Access to On-Line Career Courses |
Southeast Texas residents interested in improving their skills now have access to as many as
6,000 on-line courses through the SkillUp Portal on setworks.org. The courses are provided by
Metrix E-Learning System, a nationally recognized, on-line learning platform that helps
communities solutions to improve workforce challenges. The courses are available at no cost
and can help job seekers enhance or even eliminate their skills gaps and become more competitive
in the job market. Through the Skillup Portal, individuals may take practice assessments as they
advance toward completing the specified training and earning an industry-recognized certification.
"SkillUp Southeast Texas affords residents an invaluable opportunity to expand
their knowledge and learn new skills that appeal to employers in the current
job market," said Mary Hammon, Workforce Solutions Southeast Texas executive director.
"In addition to technical tracks and industry certifications, soft skills courses
such as time management, communication, and business etiquette are also offered
through the SkillUp portal. Soft skills are in high demand with employers. In r
ecent business forums we conducted, employers across multiple industries highlighted
an increased need for these skills."

"Southeast Texas Works!" PODCAST UPDATE
The May episode of Southeast Texas Works! monthly podcast features Dr. Shannon Allen,
Superintendent of Beaumont Independent School District (BISD). Dr. Allen discusses a
myriad of topics including the district's partnership with Lamar University in the
Cardinal NEST program, which create a unique and innovative learning space through
Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math (STEAM) - focused labs for BISD
elementary students. The "nests" support the development of financial literacy
and career exploration. Dr. Allen also discusses the Workforce Solutions Southeast
Texas Youth Career Expo, BISD's new maritime program, her career pathway to becoming
a superintendent and how the district dealt with the pandemic.

New Board Member Update - Welcome Dr. Angela Hill
The Texas Workforce Commission (TWC) approved the appointment of Dr. Angela Hill
to the Southeast Texas Workforce Development Board in April 2022.
Dr. Angela Hill, Associate Vice President for Student and Academic Success, has been
with Lamar Institute of Technology (LIT) since 2009. She has nearly two decades of
K-12 and higher education expertise. Prior to joining LIT, she taught business
education to at-risk high school students.
