Golden Triangle Polymers and Southeast Texas Launch "Local First" |
On March 14, 2023, Golden Triangle Polymers Company awarded $200,000 to Workforce Solutions
Southeast Texas to create and maintain "Local First", an on-line, customized talent acquisition
portal. The portal was developed to prioritize Orange County and the Golden Triangle region
for employment opportunities for the Golden Triangle Polymers Project. The company donated
a total of $400,000 for the Local First initiative with $200,000 being utilized by Orange
County to ensure local vendors, suppliers, and service companies participate in the estimated
$50 billion dollars of residual economic impact of the construction of facility being built
in Orange, Texas.
"'Local First' is a supplemental outreach tool to serve the local community", remarked
Mary Hammon, executive director, Workforce Solutions Southeast Texas. "The program allows
workforce to provide a customized, hands-on effort to ensure individuals interested in
working during the construction phases of the facility can apply for various jobs."
The portal database will include jobs available with the primary engineering, procurement,
and construction (EPC) companies. Workforce staff will provide one-on-one employability
screening to job seekers who register in the portal and offer other services, such as
resume writing assistance and interviewing skills workshops. After screening, job seekers
will be connected to the employers that need applicants with specific construction,
technical, or support skills.

"Southeast Texas Works!" PODCAST UPDATE
The March 2023 podcast release, "Law Enforcement Careers with Texas DPS", features
two Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) officers, Sergeant Shanna Clark and
Sergeant Grant Belvin. Clark shares insight on being a woman in a male-dominated
occupation and stresses the importance of knowing the laws of the state as well as
being in top physical shape. Sergeant Belvin, a frequent participant in local job
fairs, talks about various careers in public safety including forensic science and
support staff. Both sergeants share their personal story of becoming a public safety
officer.

Workforce welcomes Nagel as new board member
In March the Texas Workforce Commission appointed Brian Nagel, ExxonMobil, mechanical
manager, to the Southeast Texas workforce board. Nagel, a US Navy Veteran, has held
various positions including integrated construction and project manager, process
operating supervisor, and engineering supervisor.

Workforce Solutions Southeast Texas publishes updated local labor market information (LMI) on
the Southeast Texas DASHBOARD at setworks.org. The data, provided by the Texas Workforce
Commission and the U.S. Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics is updated by board
staff and may be accessed 24/7.
The At A Glance section of the Dashboard displays the number of Unemployment Insurance
(UI) claims per week and also highlights the top industries affected by the claims in our
Workforce Development Area (WDA 18).
The Southeast Texas LMI Press Release, sent out to subscribers as TWC publishes the
