NDEAM - Inclusion Works!
Disability in our nation ranges from children to elderly and disabled veterans
and has direct impact in our community. October is National Disability Employment
Awareness Month and Workforce Solutions Southeast Texas is joining with our partners
to raise awareness to several disabilities connecting employers and disabled citizens.
This year we are celebrating by hosting "NDEAM - Inclusion Works!" where Dr. Temple
Grandin will be our guest speaker. Dr. Grandin is an award-winning author, professor,
and strong autism advocate. She overcame her own challenges with severe autism and
now shares tips and strategies that helped her be successful. She went on to star
in the HBO movie "Temple Grandin" where her story was told, how she overcame her
obstacles despite her disability.
Dr. Grandin is now a professor of Animal Science at Colorado State University and was
inducted into The National Women's Hall of Fame and the Academy of Arts and Sciences.
Growing up with autism she was bullied by peers and during that time she grew a passion
for riding and caring for horses as it helped her cope with being teased. Most cattle
in the U.S. are handled by facilities that she designed. Dr. Grandin is also a well-known
author and will be available to sign books prior to and after her keynote speech.
Also speaking at the event are Allison Schamberg and Ashley Ford. A special needs
planning advocate, Allison Schaberg, began helping a charity that serves children
and families with life threatening and disabling illnesses. Allison aids families
with financial planning assistance, she has been an entrepreneur for over 25 years
at Consolidated Planning group in Sugar Land, Texas. Ashley Ford, Director of Public
Policy & Advocacy for the Arc of Texas, oversees public policy to protect human
rights and self-determination in people with disabilities. Ashley serves on several
boards advocating for Texans with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
