Southeast Texas Workforce Centers Re-Open to the Public
On September 29, 2020, executive director Marilyn Smith announced the reopening
of the Workforce Solutions Southeast Texas Centers in Beaumont and Port Arthur.
Based on Governor Greg Abbott's updated "Open Texas" guidelines and the Centers
for Disease Control (CDC), the workforce centers are operating as
follows:
- Masks are mandated for all Customers (job seekers and employers) and staff
- Plexi-glass sneeze guards have been installed at all staff desks and the front receptions desks in the Centers
- Hand sanitizing stations are placed throughout each facility for use by Customers and staff
- Social distancing decals are strategically placed to guide Customers while in the Centers
- Resource Room computer stations and surrounding areas are cleaned frequently and after each Customer's use

October 2020 Southeast Texas UI Claimant Update
The number of Unemployment claimants continues to decline in Southeast Texas, according
to data from the Texas Workforce Commission. As of reporting period 9/16/2020 to 10/17/2020,
the active UI claimant count stands at 2,864. Workforce Center staff outreaches specifically to
UI claimants to assist those individuals with employment needs and returning to work. Our
workforce development area (WDA) ranks 14th on the list of Texas counties for number of UI
claimants as the unemployment rate for the state continues to improve.

the Texas Workforce Commission (TWC) guidebook for employers, has been updated to include
the Top Ten Tips for employers. Topics covered include Pay and Policy Issues, Types of Work

Welcome New Board Member - Daniel Marshall
In October, Daniel Marshall, BBVA, was appointed to the Southeast Texas Workforce
Development Board. Marshall, a native of Hardin County, has an extensive background
in the financial industry and currently holds a position as District Productivity
Specialist/East Texas with BBVA USA.

Southeast Texas Labor Market Information Overview: September 2020
The unemployment rate for Southeast Texas rose to 12.3 percent, up a full 2.2 percent
from August which was reported at 10.3 percent. The increase in unemployment in the
workforce development area may be attributed to factors such as the lingering recovery
from Hurricane Laura, which hit Cameron, Louisiana and caused mandatory evacuations and
business closures in Southeast Texas.
