"Southeast Texas Works!" PODCAST UPDATE
In May, Dr. Janeal White, coordinator for the Southeast Texas Coalition for the Homeless,
joined hosts Kevin King and guest host, Maris Peno, to discuss the issue of homelessness
in our area. Dr. White's organization, South East Texas Coalition for the Homeless Program
(SETCH), is a community services division of the Southeast Texas Regional Planning Commission
(SETRPC). Her group works to identify gaps in existing services and connects community
organizations that provide services and aid for the homeless. In the podcast, Dr. White
mentions that collecting local data on the homeless population is a difficult task.
Part 1 of our conversation with Hardin County Commissioner Chris Kirkendall was also
released in May. Kirkendall, a native of Hardin County, discusses key issues of the
county including infrastructure maintenance, disaster preparations, and the skills
students need to actively participate in the workforce. He shares his pride in the
local school district's efforts to partner with institutes of higher learning to
prepare students for in-demand jobs and promising career opportunities. Be sure to
listen to Part 2 of the Kirkendall podcast which will be released in June.
