Southeast Texas Labor Market Information Overview - January 2020
The January 2020 unemployment rate for Southeast Texas workforce development area was 6.0 percent, up .5 percent from December. The rate for the metropolitan statistical area (MSA), which includes Newton County, was also 6.0 percent.

Local industries that held steady job growth include the Transportation, Warehousing and Utilities, Information, Financial Activities, Leisure and Hospitality, and the Government sectors. Data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) indicate job growth in only two industries in January, Wholesale Trade and Other Services, which added 100 jobs each.

On the downside of the employment scale, the following industries showed job losses in Southeast Texas:
  • Mining, Logging and Construction
  • Manufacturing
  • General Merchandise Stores
  • Professional and Business Services
  • Education and Health Services
