Shahan Receives Workforce Development Service Award

A special presentation was made during February’s board meeting to honor Dr. J. Michael Shahan
for his many years of service with the Board. As President of Lamar State College – Orange, Shahan
has brought a wealth of knowledge and expertise in the area of Adult Basic Education and
Continuing Education.

Board Chair Chuck Kalkbrenner presented Shahan with a service award plaque recognizing his
15 years of active board service.

Job Seeker Ambassador - Job Retention is the Goal

Melissa Honeycutt’s experience with Workforce Solutions was definitely a win-win for her and her
family. As a stay-at-home mom, she struggled to make ends meets. Though her husband had a
job with decent wages, she realized that she needed to work to help with the expenses of raising
four children. Melissa also realized she needed her high school diploma to be able to compete
for employment.

Melissa made the decision to attend the GED remediation program at the Orange Workforce
Center. With onsite assistance from Bruce Martin, the GED Lab’s certified teacher, Melissa studied
diligently and earned her GED within four months.

Welcome our New Board Member – Beth Knape

As Regional Human Resource Manager for one of the area’s largest employers, Beth Knape is a
tremendous asset as our newest Southeast Texas board member. Her experience in workforce
development and employee retention brings valuable working insight and direction to our board’s
objectives of creating, promoting and supporting economic growth and expansion in
Southeast Texas.

Beth is responsible for employee relations for Conn’s retail stores from Houston to Louisiana
and oversees recruiting for sales, service, distribution and collections.
