Make a Difference with Summer Employment

The 2010 Summer Youth Employment Program began Monday, June 21. Approximately 200 youth started work in various businesses throughout Southeast Texas. Another larger group will start July 5, 2010. Job duties to be performed include office and clerical, child care, recreational activities assistance, vet care, and warehouse work. Wages are subsidized at $7.25/hr and youth will be able to work at least thirty (30) hour per week.
We’re off to a strong start, but still need additional employer worksites for Jefferson, Orange, and Hardin Counties. You can make a difference by “mentoring” the youth, exposing them to the ‘real work’ environment, and teaching them the benefits of following directions and completing projects.
As mentioned in our workforce intelligence article, soft skills rank #1 with the majority of employers in Southeast Texas. “Soft skills” commonly refers to skills and characteristics that allow individuals to succeed in the workplace, such as a strong work ethic, an ability to work in teams, self-discipline, self-confidence, punctuality and courtesy. As an employer site, you can share your expertise and teach local youth the importance of motivation, problem solving, team work, and a positive attitude.
