June 2020 Labor Market Information Overview
The Leisure and Hospitality industry in Southeast Texas lead job growth and helped to
improve the unemployment rate to 12.8 percent (not seasonally adjusted) in June,
a drop of 5 percentage points from May's rate of 17.8 percent. Most of the hiring
activity can be attributed to the Open Texas strategy, phased reopening of businesses
in arts, entertainment, recreation, and food service sectors. The chart below outlines

Employers deemed as essential in the service-providing industries continued to recruit and hire,
on a limited basis in Southeast Texas. The workforce centers assisted 19 employers and 140 job
seekers through virtual job fairs and hiring events in May and June. Job growth remained constant
in several industries including Mining, Logging and Construction, Information, and Financial Activities.
"We encourage our local businesses to continue to partner with Workforce Solutions and utilize
our Virtual platforms, to recruit and hire workers. Workforce center staff are available to
assist businesses, through our on-line tools, safely outreach and connect with individuals
who are actively seeking employment", stated Marilyn Smith, workforce executive director.
reported an 8.6 percent unemployment rate for June with as many as 243,900 private sector
jobs added to the economy. The Leisure and Hospitality industry lead the state's job growth
with 142,700 jobs added in June. The state's unemployment remains below the national rate of
