Employers: Use OJT To Train Your Employees

On the Job Training (OJT) is a cornerstone initiative for employers in workforce development. OJT, coupled with other business-focused incentives such as Work Opportunity Tax Credit (WOTC), can significantly defray costs of hiring and training employees. Many individuals in the local workforce possess skills and experience that can be customized, through OJT, for a particular business. Imogene Chargois, director of workforce center operations, stated, “On the job Training program is a “win-win” for both the employer and the job seeker. The employers have opportunities to save their business’ money while ensuring the worker is trained in accordance to their job specifications.” Employers can hire special populations, including Veterans, long-term unemployed individuals, and people with special needs, and receive up to 50 percent reimbursement for wages during the OJT training period.

Workforce Announces New Target Occupations List

With the approval of the Board’s 2017 – 2020 Strategic and Operation Plan by the Texas Workforce Investment Council (TWIC), the Board will adopt an updated list of Target Occupations for Southeast Texas. The Plan was posted to the Board’s web-site for public review and comment in January 2017. The new list is the results of intensive analysis of the workforce development area’s labor market and economic trends in various industries throughout Jefferson, Hardin, and Orange counties. Several factors were taken into account:

  • Wages and self sufficiency
  • Project growth rates for occupations
  • Education level and training requirements
  • Number of people working in each occupation
  • In demand industry sectors
