Board Posts Strategic Plan for Public Comment

Southeast workforce board has posted its 2017 – 2020 Strategic Plan for public comment. The Strategic Plan, required by law to be submitted by each of the 28 workforce boards in Texas, outlines local strategies for collaboration and partnership with business and industry to improve the quality of the workforce and increase the economic growth of each region. The draft plan also contains the Target Occupation list which consists of occupations that have future growth potential and offer wages that meet local self-sufficiency requirements.

The Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) reconfirms the workforce center (aka One Stops) as the direct connection to employers and jobs seekers for employment services, training and education related to occupations which booster self-sufficiency and may lessen dependency on public assistance.

Latest Labor Market Stats

The December Unemployment Rate for the Beaumont – Port Arthur metropolitan statistical area (MSA) has been reported as 7.4 percent, a one percent increase over November 2016. The sharp decline in jobs in the Mining, Logging & Construction sector helped to move the rate into the higher percentage. “The job losses in the sector were mostly construction related”, according to Ira McNeil, LMI/Business Consultant for Workforce Solutions. “Welders, scaffolding carpenters, structural steel workers and other related crafts, skilled and non-skilled, lost jobs in December”. Data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) indicated job losses in Education and Health Services, State Government and Administrative and Support sectors in Southeast Texas.
