Southeast Texas Receives $351,202 in 2nd Round Grant Funding
For the second consecutive year, Workforce Solutions Southeast Texas has received the Texas
Talent Connect Grant for the Student Interns and Teacher Extern initiative. The funding
will allow Southeast Texas to address the talent needs of our local industries, increase
potential employment opportunities, and help foster a productive connection between
business and education.
The Internship portion of the Southeast Texas Talent Connection grant will allow workforce
to partner with local colleges and training providers and provide paid internship opportunities
to students nearing successful completion of their course of study. This grant allotment will
also provide paid internship assignments for as may as 10 high school students. The internship,
which requires basic eligibility, can provide a student in an unpaid position, to earn $15.00
per hour, 20 hours per week for 8 weeks at a site directly linked to the student's training
program. Workforce projects placing a total of 41 students in paid work opportunities through the grant.
Southeast Texas will build on the momentum from the first-year funding and offer 60
educators in Jefferson, Orange, and Hardin counties the opportunity to spend several
days at companies in high-demand industries. The educators will experience the technical
and professional skills, communication and business ethics in local industries that offer
high-wage opportunities, with career advancement opportunities. Teachers will transform
their real-world industry experiences into engaging lesson plans to help students understand
the required academic knowledge, technical, and craft skills needed to be successful.
Educators will also make group presentations. Host companies represent local high demand
industries including petrochemical, manufacturing, health care, medical, and maritime.
Educators that successfully complete the one-week externship will receive a $1,000 stipend.
