Southeast Texas Receives $100,000 Texas Industry Partnership Grant

Graduates of the 1st Women's Entrepreneurship Bootcamp, LIT Multi-purpose Center.

Workforce Solutions, LIT graduate first Women's Entrepreneurship Bootcamp Class

Workforce Solutions, in partnership with Lamar Institute of Technology, recently graduated 31 women from its first Women's Entrepreneurship Bootcamp. The eight-week course was made possible through a $28,700 grant from Texas Workforce Commission.

The course, which was offered in Spanish on Tuesday evening and in English on Thursday evenings, consisted of seven modules which included topics such as Becoming a Legal Business, Marketing, Small Business Finance, Customer Relationship Management, HR Essentials and How to Write a Business Plan. The classes also featured several guest speakers including a social media expert and a representative from the Small Business Development Center.

"I learned so much," participant Dorsha Cravin stated. "I wish I would have taken this class five years ago, there was so much valuable information. The instructor and guest speakers were awesome!"

Many of the Bootcamp participants had already started a business while several others where still in the planning phases. Businesses created by the participants included restaurants, hair and beauty salons, graphic design services, wedding accessories stores, and more.

Southeast Receives Monetary Award at Conference
Workforce Solutions Southeast Texas received a $30,000 Board Performance Incentive award at the 23rd Annual Texas Workforce Conference, December 4, 2019. The incentive award was presented by the Bryan Daniel, Chairman and Commissioner Representing the Public. The Award recognizes a board for serving a significant number of foster youth as compared to the total number of youth being served. Southeast Texas was recognized as #1 in the quartile of similarly sized boards.

The Golden Triangle Business Roundtable (GTBR) is one of the workforce development system partners in Southeast Texas. W. Dennis Isaacs, executive director, has launched a new survey to solicit feedback regarding current practices in the local area surrounding the issue of manpower development and skills training.
