KAT Excavation and Construction, Inc., Sour Lake, was honored as the Local Employer of Excellence for Workforce Solutions Southeast Texas at the 22nd Annual Texas Workforce Conference, held November 27 - 30, in Houston. The award honors private sector businesses that are actively involved with workforce development.

KAT has continually partnered with Workforce Solutions to hire skilled, experienced workers, including Veterans. The company also created a positive environment in the workplace to help reduce employee turnover through training, advancement, and recognition for job performance. Additionally, KAT is involved in their local community through Julie Rogers Gift of Life, Chambers of Commerce, and the "Hardin County Strong" organization, which provided meals to First Responders during Tropical storm Harvey.

The company was also recognized as one of three finalist in the Small Business of the Year category at the TWC Conference. The Small Employer of the Year is a competitive award for companies with 99 employees or less. Finalists are selected by the Texas Workforce Commission and highlighted, though a short film, to the conference audience.

KAT Excavation and Construction owners, Belinda and Kerry Trest, and their staff, were delighted with being selected for the final three businesses and expressed their gratitude for the recognition. "We cannot thank each of you enough for your encouragement, your kindness, and your belief in KAT. We remain so moved by all the heartfelt encouragement you shared with us", stated Belinda. "Each of you have made us feel like winners." KAT received a glass trophy for their nomination in the Small Business of the Year category.
