Happy Holidays from the Executive Director

In Southeast Texas, 2014 was a year of exciting occurrences for workforce development beginning with the President's signature of the Water Resources Reform and Development Act in June 2014. This bill gave the green light to the long anticipated waterway deepening project to dredge the 65 mile long Sabine Neches ship channel. According to economic development experts, the project will generate thousands of new permanent jobs over the 10 year life of the project. Beaumont will soon be the home of the largest methanol plant in the nation with the announcement of the OCI Natgasoline construction and expansion. There are reports from oil experts that another major plant expansion is in the works for Southeast Texas and we are anxiously awaiting confirmation from refinery officials. This activity will spill over into 2015 and we expect job availability to be the highest levels in our current history. Southeast Texas has experienced LOW unemployment rates for two consecutive months as Texas continues to be the job-generator state of the USA.

STAR Employers and Partners Recognized at Board Meeting

The December 2014 Board meeting included special recognition and tribute to local employers, services providers, and businesses that effectively partner with Southeast Texas in workforce development. S & B Engineers & Contractors, LTD, selected by Port Arthur Workforce Center staff, was recognized as a STAR employer for their business principles and workforce collaboration. The company developed and funded industrial craft training with a focus on women as non-traditional participants in the industry. The Women in Construction training course and the New Employee Accelerate (NEAT) Pilot were two of the outstanding initiatives from S & B.
