July 2020 Labor Market Information Overview
Southeast Texas unemployment rate of 11.9 percent reflected a slight improvement from June's rate of 12.5 percent. Data from the Texas Workforce Commission indicates as many as 20,000 individuals in Jefferson, Orange, Hardin and Newton counties remain unemployed in July. The majority of employment is related to the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Overall, industries throughout the Service Providing supersector, Retail Trade including General Merchandising Stores and Transportation, Warehousing, and Utilities, remained steady in July. Jobs in the Information industry sector along with Professional Business Services and Other Services also remained steady. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) data indicated job losses in Manufacturing, Mining, Logging and Construction, Education and Health Services, and Government sectors in Southeast Texas. Leisure and Hospitality and Retail Trade current employment statistics indicated job growth of 300 and 100 respectively.

In July, the state of Texas, as reported by TWC on August 21st, added 31,400 jobs to the economy and experienced a decrease to the seasonally-adjusted unemployment rate to 8.0 percent. The decrease in the state's overall unemployment rate indicates "Texas employers are hiring", according to a statement released by Aaron Demerson, TWC Commissioner Representing Employers. Texas' unemployment rate remains below the national seasonally-adjusted rate of 10.2 percent.
