Texas Economy Adds 23,600 Jobs in July – Texas' labor market grew by an estimated 173,000 seasonally adjusted jobs over the past year with the addition of 23,600 nonfarm jobs in July.

Welders Graduate through Certification Initiative

In August, six welders successfully graduated from Lamar Institute of Technology (LIT) through the Industry-Recognized Skills Certification Initiative. Workforce Solutions Southeast Texas applied for and was awarded $85,000 to focus on assisting interested individuals obtain skills that are certified and portable, recognized in the construction and manufacturing industries. Welding was selected as the focus occupation for the initiative due to the high demand in Southeast Texas.

The initiative allowed Workforce and the training provider to bring together and leverage employer requirements, job seeker’s skills and certification requirements in this high-demand occupation.


Sharing Solutions meets "Greatest Challenges"

Sharing Solutions, the professional social services group, met on August 11, 2016, at the LIT Multi-purpose Center, to discuss and share agency information regarding several topics identified by representatives in the April kick-off meeting. The speakers and presentations were specifically geared to help the group address and formulate solutions to issues such as funding for programs and services, mental health and substance abuse services, homeless assistance, and reentry and integration of ex-offenders. Shaun Davis, executive director, Southeast Texas Regional Planning Commission (SETRPC) spoke to the group about the many services offered through SETRPC.

Small Business Owner becomes newest Board member
Southeast Texas welcomes Roxanne Acosta-Hellberg to the workforce board. Acosta-Hellberg’s appointment to the Board was approved by the Texas Workforce Commission in August 2016.

The July 2016 unemployment rate for Southeast Texas workforce development area (WDA) increased to 7.4 percent, up .5 percent from June's rate of 6.9 percent.
