Welders Graduate through Certification Initiative
In August, six welders successfully graduated from Lamar Institute of Technology (LIT) through the Industry-Recognized Skills Certification Initiative. Workforce Solutions Southeast Texas applied for and was awarded $85,000 to focus on assisting interested individuals obtain skills that are certified and portable, recognized in the construction and manufacturing industries. Welding was selected as the focus occupation for the initiative due to the high demand in Southeast Texas.

The initiative allowed Workforce and the training provider to bring together and leverage employer requirements, job seeker’s skills and certification requirements in this high-demand occupation. LIT developed ‘fast track’ training to upgrade the skills of job seekers, some of whom were previously unable to pass the welding certification or skills needed to be upgraded. Workforce was also able to increase the assessment capacity in Southeast Texas as one local company has completed the accreditation process to become a skills assessment center for welders. According to Ira McNeil, Business Solutions Consultant, “Previously, an individual in Southeast Texas had to drive to Deer Park, Texas, for the welding certification assessment. Now, we have one local company that can officially perform the certification and another company, in Nederland, that is about to complete the accreditation process.”

Sixty (60) percent of the initial grant training class completed the LIT training and half of those welders have passed the American Welding Society (AWS) Certified Structural Steel Welder assessment. The second training class started in August as McNeil foresees an even high completion rate. “We are pleased that the Industry-Recognized Skills Initiative allows workforce to partner with local training providers to increase access to portable certifications, increase worker’s skills and their ability to earn higher wages.” For more information on this and other initiatives designed to cost-effectively train workers, contact our Business Solutions Consultants at 409-719-4750.
