Work In Texas
Employers Continue to Hire using Virtual Tools
As the response to the pandemic severely limited interaction and engagement throughout communities in Southeast Texas, Workforce Solutions continued to assist employers and businesses with recruitment and hiring employees. Employers, including those deemed essential to the economy, utilized our on-line event software application, Brazen, to recruit and hire employees. Many employers were able to safely connect to job seekers and hire individuals that meet the company's particular skill and educational requirements. A long-time workforce partner, the Crisis Center of Southeast Texas, experienced a shortage of professional staff. Services provided by the agency such as intervention in critical family and personal situations were in demand and the agency needed to fill openings for a case manager and assistant director. Additionally, Cheryl Williams, agency director, was a bit hesitant to participate in a virtual, on-line event due to the lack of experience with technology and social media.

The workforce employer services unit staff assured the director she would be assisted through each step of the virtual event, including screening and referring candidates whose skills, experience, and knowledge matched the open job positions. Workforce staff assisted Williams in creating her on-line 'booth', in Brazen. In November, Williams hired an applicant from the virtual job fair to fill the case manager position. In December, Williams hired another skilled, qualified applicant outreached during a virtual job fair. "Connecting job seekers to employers to meet manpower demands in Southeast Texas remains at the forefront of our operations", commented Mary Hammon, executive director.

With the reopening of the state of Texas as declared by Governor Abbot, virtual job fairs and hiring events continue to be an effective tool for many Southeast Texas businesses. The workforce centers have experienced a steady increase in the number of employers hiring through on-line event software. In March 2021, workforce centers hosted 6 Virtual job fairs; 105 employers participated in the events and offered a total of 104 job postings. Registration data collected during March indicated over 600 jobs seekers attended the events. Several employers have partnered with the workforce centers to hold in-person events, working with the center staff to ensure the health and safety of all participants.
