Training Grant benefits Businesses and Local Workers

Two local refineries, Firestone Polymers, LLS and E.I. du Pont de Nemours will utilize a total of $316,251 from the Skills Development Fund (SDF) to train and upgrade the skills of hundreds of new and incumbent workers. The companies have partnered with Lamar State College-Orange in this training endeavor.

Workers that receive training through the SDF grant at E.I. du Pont de Nemours will include manufacturing engineers, chemical technicians and first responders. The focus for the company is safety, water management, and licensing and regulatory compliance requirements. Average wages for the workers will be $33.95 per hour after completion of the training, according the Texas Workforce Commission’s press release.


Employers - Connect to Students in the Summer Earn & Learn Initiative

The Summer Earn and Learn (SEAL) program has begun in Southeast Texas! Our goal is to provide work-readiness training and paid work opportunity to students with disabilities, improve their career preparation through positive, real work experiences. Workforce will partner with local Texas Workforce Solutions Vocational Rehabilitation Services representatives to select students and link the students to businesses, through paid internships, who will help provide hands-on work opportunities.

Workforce Board Welcomes Two New Members
Southeast Texas Workforce added new members Jerome Delafosse and Steve Slauson to the board in March. Jerome Delafosse is the Senior Manager, Human Resources, for Valero Energy Corporation, Port Arthur Refinery and represents Private Sector-Large, South Jefferson County. Delafosse has extensive human resources experience and knowledge of Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO),

Latest Labor Market Stats
The jobs outlook continued to improve for Jefferson, Orange and Hardin counties in March. The unemployment rate was 6.6 percent for the period, according to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).
