Southeast Texas and Local EDC Secure High Demand Job Training Grant
Shortly after the Texas Workforce Commission announced the availability of incentive funds to help support economic development and workforce collaborations, Southeast Texas immediately began work with local Economic Development Councils to find job training opportunity. In their efforts to strengthen the job outlook for local individuals by upgrading job seeker skills, the Port Arthur EDC and Workforce Solutions Southeast Texas collaborated with a local employer to employ and train local job seekers in skills necessary to meet the employer's needs.

The High Demand Job Grant funds work experience for new employees in high demand occupations for a twelve month period. Individuals who are identified as having some knowledge of a craft or trade, or skilled but unemployed for a period of time, or unskilled and having some occupational aptitude were considered eligible to participate. The Port Arthur EDC developed detailed job training plans with a local company, Team Fabricators, to train new employees, on-site, utilizing experienced instructors to help ensure the employee’s successful completion of the 12 week program. According to the company’s representative, David Cherry, the first 12-week program has begun and five of the six employees are well on the way to completing the training. RanNoda McClain-Lee, marketing manager and business recruitment specialist for the Port Arthur EDC commented, “The EDC has seen success in carrying out its mission to increase the local workforce skills development and employment base. This is a great collaborative effort.”

Team Fabricators plans to hire and train a total of 24 individuals through this job training grant and funds from the Port Arthur EDC. For more information regarding the High-Demand Job Training Grant, please contact Ira McNeil at 409-719-4750.
