On April 10, 2014, Commissioner Hope Andrade, Texas Workforce Commissioner Representing Employers, addressed the audience at the Business Development Week general session. Andrade, appointed by Governor Rick Perry in March 2013, spoke of her role as the champion and advocate for more than 400,000 Texas employers and how she works to ensure that employers’ interests are considered in all Commission actions. As a former small business owner, Andrade mentioned she wished she had known all the resources and assistance available to business owners, most at no cost, through Workforce Solutions. She encouraged employers to take advantage of the business solutions and tax incentives.

One of the strategic goals for the Southeast Workforce Board is to “Ensure awareness among students in grades 8 thru 12, their parents, teachers and counselors regarding technical skills and careers and the job opportunities associated with these skills.” With the approval of House Bill 5 (HB5), The Foundation High School Program which includes new graduation requirements, Board members wanted to ensure their understanding of the full implications of the new legislation. Candyce Tompkins, Career & Technology Education (CTE) Program Coordinator, presented the facts to Board members during the April 1, 2014 meeting.
