August Labor Market Figures
The Local Area Unemployment Statistics (LAUS) data indicates a slight decrease in the labor force for August 2017 in our metropolitan statistical area (MSA), which includes Jefferson, Orange, Hardin and Newton counties. The unemployment rate (UI) for the month was 7.2 percent, up slightly from July 6.8 percent UI rate. Job growth was indicated in Mining Logging & Construction, Manufacturing, General Merchandise Stores and Professional and Business Services industry sectors. Chemical Manufacturing again maintained job levels from July through August, as did other local industries including Information, Financial Activities, Trade Transportation and Utilities, Wholesale Trade, and Leisure & Hospitality.

Texas employers added jobs to the economy with Trade Transportation and Utilities industry adding 9,100 jobs in August. The state’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate fell to 4.2 percent, down from 4.3 percent in July. Although private-sector employment activity has been strong, state and local officials are braced for the upcoming data which will indicate the economic impact of Hurricane Harvey in the disaster-declared counties.

“Bringing our area’s economy back will be a task after the hurricane and extensive flooding” commented Marilyn Smith, executive director. “Helping individuals get back to work quickly will have a positive impact on all recovery efforts. Please remember that our services are available to job seekers at no cost. Be aware of employment scams. Feel free to contact us at 1-877-834-5627 regarding hiring and employment opportunities.”
