February Labor Market Figures
Southeast Texas’ employment rebounded slightly in February according to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). The unemployment rate fell to 6.8 percent for Jefferson, Orange and Hardin counties, down from 7.3 percent in January. Mining, Logging and Construction, Professional and Business Services and Leisure and Hospitality were the local industries posting modest job growth during February. Job decline was indicated in Manufacturing, Retail Trade and Government employment. Industry sectors with unchanged employment activity include Wholesale Trade, Information, Financial Activities, and Education and Health Services.

Texas as a whole added over 42,000 jobs in February according to the Texas Workforce Commission (TWC) and posted a 4.0 percent seasonally adjusted unemployment rate. Industries leading the job growth throughout Texas include Professional and Business Services, Mining and Logging, and Trade Transportation and Utilities.

Although historical UI data indicates Beaumont – Port Arthur remains one of the three areas in Texas with the highest unemployment rate, job seekers looking for work have many local employment opportunities. Employers in Southeast Texas have posted several hundred jobs requiring various skill levels, occupational certifications and experience. “Job seekers who may have been laid off due to company closures have options including temporary work sites and short-term training”, stated Marilyn Smith, executive director. “Individuals still looking for work are encouraged to attend upcoming job fairs and meet employers, face-to-face.”
