Workforce Honors Employers, Jobs Seekers, Sponsors and Partners

Workforce Solutions Southeast Texas Board held its annual recognition event on Tuesday, March 1, 2016 at the MCM Elegante Hotel & Conference Center in Beaumont. Board chair, Sue Daniels facilitated the first portion of the event and with assistance from other Board members, recognized employers, sponsors, partners, contractors and the job seeker of the year.

The event's guest speaker was Candy Slocum, executive director of Interlink, Inc., a regional non-profit business-education alliance in North Center Texas. Slocum, a labor market strategist and futurist, presented "The Game Changers-Macro Trends" and described 'a day in the life of' a person living in the year 2025.

Workforce Solutions Southeast Texas Employer and Business Award Recipients

Baptist Hospitals of Southeast Texas received the 2015 Local Employer of Excellence Awards trophy. Baptist was also recognized in November at the Texas Workforce Conference in Dallas. Baptist partnered with the workforce system to recruit and hire staff for the expansion of the hospital's care units. Several individuals were hired, including Veterans, received On-the-Job Training and were able to help the hospital provide support to physicians, nurses and patients in the unit. Baptist also supports other organizations in the community to improve healthcare and make fundamental differences in the lives of individuals in Southeast Texas.

STAR Job Seeker of the Year and STAR Contractor Performance Award Recipients

This award identifies an individual who has experienced a significant improvement in his/her life due to their association with the workforce system.

Desirea Myers, a single mother of two, worked on and off in various job with no clear career path. Realizing she needed financial stability, Myers approached the workforce center for assistance in improving her skills. She was enrolled in the Electrical Apprenticeship Program and began participating in On-the-Job Training. Myers has increased her skill level and now earns up to $17.30 per hour as an apprentice electrician, a high demand/high wage occupation in Southeast Texas.

2015 STAR Sponsor and STAR Partner Awards Recipients

In 2015, Workforce Solutions Southeast Texas took on the ambitious project of creating and implementing our first region-wide youth event. The purpose of the expo was two-fold - to "educate" local youth about the numerous high wage/high demand occupations available in Southeast Texas; and to have "real employers" demonstrate the occupations within their companies for student to witness and the employers got a chance to meet the "future workforce".

Board Members Recognized for Years of Service
Several members of the Workforce Board were recognized for their years of service during the 2015 Awards Luncheon. "Each member of this Board is a VOLUNTEER", stated Marilyn Smith, executive director, "They give their time unselfishly, to the management and oversight of the local workforce system. They are extraordinary individuals, dedicated to Southeast Texas."

Latest Labor Market Stats

The Beaumont-Port Arthur MSA posted a 6.7 percent unemployment rate for January 2016, .1 percent higher than in December 2015. Although data from the Texas Workforce Commission (TWC) indicated job decline in several industry sectors in Southeast Texas, Professional Business Services and Leisure and Hospitality sectors posted a 2.0% and 1.3 % job growth.
