Disaster Unemployment Assistance Available for Flood-Affected Areas

The March 8th weather event in Southeast Texas resulted in a reported 10 - 18 inches of rain and severely affected several counties in East and Southeast Texas, including Orange and Newton counties, which are part of the Board's metropolitan statistical area (MSA). On March 18, 2018, Governor Greg Abbott requested and received federal approval for Individual Assistance and Public Assistance for Jasper, Orange and Newton counties, via the Presidential Disaster Declaration. On March 21, 2016, the Texas Workforce Commission (TWC) alerted Southeast Texas and other workforce areas that workers in the disaster-declared areas would be eligible to apply for Disaster Unemployment Assistance (DUA) if they had list their jobs or been unable to work due to flooding straight-line winds, or tornadoes brought on by the severe storms.

Southeast Texas to Host TWC Regional Strategic Planning Session

Workforce Solutions Southeast Texas will be the host Board for the upcoming Regional Strategic Planning meeting scheduled for April 28, 2016, at Region 5 Education Service Center. The purpose of the event is to update the Texas Workforce Commissioners about workforce development challenges, successes, and on-going projects that may affect workforce demand, employer training needs, board funding and allocations. Marilyn Smith, executive director for Southeast Texas, has included workforce board directors from Deep East Texas, East Texas, and Gulf Coast, who will provide specific insights regarding their workforce areas.

Harmon is Appointed to Workforce Board
The Southeast Texas Workforce Board welcomes its newest member, Susan Harmon. Harmon, Human Resources Consultant for E.I. Dupont Sabine River Works (SRW), is a native of Auburn Washington, and has been in Texas since 1998.

Latest Labor Market Stats

February 2016 Unemployment Rate was 6.2 percent, down .5 percent from 6.7 in January 2016. Local industry employment activity reflected an overall growth in the Good Producing super-sector with jobs increase in Mining, Logging and Construction which balanced out job losses indicated in Manufacturing, Trade, Transportation and Utilities and Retail Trade.
