June Labor Market Figures

Southeast Texas experienced a slight increase in unemployment for June 2017 as the unemployment rate moved up to 7.3 percent for the metropolitan statistical area. The rate was 7.0 percent for May 2017. The labor force in Southeast Texas also increased, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) data, from 172,546 in May to 173,138 in June.

Job growth was indicated in several industry sectors in the Goods Producing and Service-Providing supersectors:
  • Manufacturing
  • Trade, Transportation and Utilities
  • Wholesale Trade
  • Retail Trade
  • Transportation, Warehousing & Utilities
  • Professional Business Services
  • Education and Health services
  • Leisure and Hospitality
Only the State and local government sectors in Southeast Texas reported job losses. Employment remained on an even keel in several industries including Mining Logging and Construction, General Merchandise Stores, Information, Financial Activities and Other Services.

The Texas economy added jobs for the 12th consecutive month as reported by the Texas Workforce Commission in their press release (http://www.twc.state.tx.us/news/texas-economy-adds-40200-jobs-june). The seasonally adjusted rate for the state came in at 4.6 percent with the addition of 40,200 jobs in June. The largest employment gain in private industry in Texas was recorded in Education and Health Services.
