Employers: Use OJT To Train Your Employees
On the Job Training (OJT) is a cornerstone initiative for employers in workforce development. OJT, coupled with other business-focused incentives such as Work Opportunity Tax Credit (WOTC), can significantly defray costs of hiring and training employees. Many individuals in the local workforce possess skills and experience that can be customized, through OJT, for a particular business. Imogene Chargois, director of workforce center operations, stated, “On the job Training program is a “win-win” for both the employer and the job seeker. The employers have opportunities to save their business’ money while ensuring the worker is trained in accordance to their job specifications.” Employers can hire special populations, including Veterans, long-term unemployed individuals, and people with special needs, and receive up to 50 percent reimbursement for wages during the OJT training period.

Additional benefits of On the job Training include the following:
  • Allows employees to “learn while they earn”.
  • Focuses on occupations involved in the creation and introduction of new technologies, services or production.
  • Helps workers upgrade to new jobs that require additional skills or workplace literacy.
  • Provides knowledge and essential skills critical to job performance.
Currently, 15 local employers have signed OJT agreements with Workforce Solutions Southeast Texas and successfully hired and trained over 25 employees in industries such as health care, manufacturing, medical, industrial maintenance and transportation. Wage reimbursements to these employers have totaled approximately $90,000 dollars. Comments from employers have been positive. Mr. Emmanuel Onuorah, owner, O&M pharmacy, commented, “The program was beneficial to assist me in finding a great employee that I was able to train at a level that’s been good for my business. Because of the program I received assistance with cost of wages while the employee was in training.”
