December Labor Market Figures
Southeast Texas's unemployment rate increased slightly in December to 6.7 percent, up just .2 percent from November. "Our area has experienced a moderate unemployment impact after Hurricane Harvey. Local refineries and other industries have continued their expansion projects and new construction in Southeast Texas. Jobs are available in Southeast Texas across all local sectors for job seekers with various skills and experience levels", commented Marilyn Smith, executive director.

Data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics indicate job growth in the following Service Providing sectors:
  • Retail Trade
  • General Merchandise Stores
  • Transportation, Warehousing and Utilities
  • Education and Health Services
  • Chemical Manufacturing
Local sectors that remained unchanged from November include Information, Financial Activities, Leisure and Hospitality and Professional Business Services. The Southeast Texas economy experienced jobs decline in the Goods Producing supersector which includes Manufacturing and Mining, Logging and Construction.

Texas' posted a 3.9 percent unemployment rate for December, below the U.S. unemployment rate of 4.1 percent. The state experienced job gains in various industries including Leisure and Hospitality, Construction, and Information.
